Chlorination Certificate

A chlorination certificate is issued after a chlorination has been carried out on a new pipe work/tank/pump/plumbing used to supply drinking water.  It should clearly describe the disinfection process used and the British Standard followed.

Disinfection by chlorination - the process

  • Flush pipe work, measuring and recording chlorine level present in supply water
  • Introduce chlorine solution to provide chlorine residual of 50mg/l throughout pipe work
  • Allow chlorine solution to contact with pipe work for minimum of one hour
  • Test chlorine level at end of the hour to ensure that level is within acceptable limits
  • Flush chlorinated water to waste until chlorine level returns to level recorded in first stage, ensuring it is dechlorinated as necessary
  • If collecting microbiological samples, allow to sit for 30 minutes prior to sample collection
  • Test chlorine residuals, turbidity and taste and odour.  Collect UKAS microbiology samples.

Low bromate sodium hypochlorite (liquid chlorine) is used for the disinfection process.  This is the same product as used by water companies to disinfect public water supplies and is approved for use in contact with drinking water.

If no sample is required the chlorination certificate can be issued on the day of the chlorination.  If a microbiological sample was collected the certificate would be issued after 2-5 days - the time taken to analyse the water.

We can often attend site at short notice to provide chlorination services - please contact us to see if we can help.

The chlorination service is similar for building services such as water tanks but it should be noted that the water tank may need to be cleaned prior to chlorination.
